Sep 2013
Its’ one of the most anticipated events in the fashion calendar, however London Fashion Week isn’t just about the clothes as designers spend hours deciding hair and make-up styles for their shows. These styles often dictate what will be popular next season, meaning that beauticians and salon owners need to make sure they know what to expect in order to satisfy their clients. However, if you are running your own business this is not always possible, so here we look at our top beauty styles from London Fashion Week:
90s Make-Up
This year a number of designers featured models sporting a more masculine look, meaning that in some shows the make-up was messier than we are used to. Each designer had their own take on the trend however it’s safe to say that the overarching theme was that the 90s are back. Think of Kate Moss back in the 90s: barely there make-up, smudges of mascara and neutral coloured lipsticks. This look is set to be huge next season, so make sure you stock up on foundations and blushers that give a natural, dewy finish. Keep in mind however that your clients will probably want a more toned down version of this, but for now it’s out with the polished look and in with a grungier feel.
Say Goodbye to Big Hair
Big hair has been in for so long now that it may be shocking to hear that in a number of shows the models had their hair slicked down. Not only this, but the complicated up-dos that we are used to seeing on our favourite celebrities have also been pushed aside in favour of simple ponytails. There are a few variations, but it seems that simplicity and sleekness is the most popular form. Surprisingly, fringes also seem to be out next season and the side parting now reigns supreme. Expect customers in the next couple of months to come in looking for simple straight cuts with a natural looking loose wave. To achieve this look it would be a good idea to stock up on hair straighteners for your salon!
Colour Pop Nails
Even though hair and make-up has gone back to the basics it seems that nails are still set to be bold and bright in Spring/Summer 2014. Nail art at London Fashion Week is decidedly elaborate, with designers applying diamonds, 3-D insects and intricate pictures on their models’ nails. The current love affair with nail art means that nail technicians need to make sure that they practice their skills as much as possible and invest in advanced equipment that will enable them to offer their clients complex nail art designs. It’s also a good idea to stock up on some new colours, especially matte versions of red, green, blue, black and pink as these were seen in a number of shows during the week!
Don’t Forget the Clothes!
Even though hair and make-up are hot topics during fashion week there is no way you can get away from the fact that there are also some fantastic clothes! Hair, make-up and nail styles are often created in order to compliment a designer’s clothing and the look they are trying to achieve, and so knowing about fashion can help you understand the popularity behind some of next season’s trends. Even if you are pushed for time investing in some fashion magazines is a great way to get to know what’s hot in fashion right now, and you could even keep them in your salon for your customers to read. It often helps to have a magazine nearby as it means clients can show you what type of look they want!
Keeping up with what’s happening in London Fashion Week is a great way to learn about new trends in the beauty industry and stay ahead of the competition. If you do decide to invest in new products or equipment don’t forget to protect them with beauty or salon insurance as these things rarely come cheap!
